Things were complicated and Eliza wasn't a hundred percent sure what she was doing. One moment she was a Quidditch star - an upcoming Chaser of the Appleby Arrows, and the next, she had left her job and applied to the one place she never wanted to work: the Ministry of Magic. One year prior, she had been accepted as an Auror at the Ministry, but she didn't like their attitude or the way they dealt in the interview. It still felt corrupt. But now that she was adopting Sally, she needed a steady job.
Eliza never thought that she would be a mother this quickly. She didn't even have a boyfriend. But she also knew that she wanted to take care of Sally. Her aunt had died in the war and it probably weighed heavily on her conscience: it was because she wouldn't give up Sally, after all. And now her parents had both died as well. She didn't have any family who would take her. Eliza couldn't let her live in an orphanage or be passed around to foster parents. Some were good, but Eliza knew that it wasn't a preferred life in any case.
Eliza had saved Sally from a Snatcher a few years ago and they owled back and forth since the war ended. When she found out about her parents, Eliza had to offer. She didn't see how she couldn't. She had been responsible for the girl's life for the better part of a year and while she had gone back to her family after the war, Eliza still felt responsible for her. Sally had been the first one she saved.
Now she was a mother - sort of. It didn't feel like it a hundred percent. And even though Sally was due to go to Hogwarts for her first year, Eliza knew she needed a more stable life for her, so she joined the Department of Mysteries as an Unspeakable. Of course, she still had preparations to make, like buying a new flat in London. All of this was so complicated and so real - she really was an adult now and doing adult things was hard. Not like when she was at Hogwarts and could stay in the Gryffindor dorms without thinking about payment or bills other than buying her school supplies at the beginning of each term.
After meeting with a muggle real estate agent, Eliza headed over to the Leaky Cauldron. For almost half of her life, she had been a witch now and she needed back into that world. So many finances and deadlines. Eliza just needed a drink.
She quickly went inside and ordered a Firewhiskey. She brought the drink to a table against the far wall and took a much needed sip. It was then that she noticed someone familiar, but she couldn't quite place it. She stared at him for a short while, while she took another sip until it finally dawned on her. James. She put the drink down rather quickly and stood up. She started to walk towards him, but then she went back for her drink. Bringing it with her, she walked over to his table. "James? Is that really you?" It had been so long, Eliza wasn't quite sure anymore; she hoped she wasn't disturbing a complete stranger.
